They say the streets of London, they say they paved with gold

Well it’s hard to believe with 2 million on the dole

You paid your taxes all your life, hard times are ahead we’re told

You’re not looking for a handout but just what you are owed

Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner

And I love London Town

Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner

That my city lets me down

We built the high rise buildings and dug tunnels under ground

We laid the railway tracks, we invented new towns

But now the works dried up and what thanks do we get
