Walter was going with a girl named Jane

People always said they looked the same

They were good looking

They met in a bar on Avenue A

They went to college in different states

They had the same friends

Things were looking good

Jane had a job in a clothing store

Walter played bass in a band of four

They practiced now and then

On Saturday nights they’d go out

Stay up late to talk they’d shout

The clubs played music loud

Walter would flirt with other girls

Jane would play with her fake pearls

She was satisfied

They were doing fine

Walter would play Jane the music he liked

Jane liked the music Walter liked

And that made Walter proud

Once in a while they’d go out of town

Go on a trip to a town they found

Or one they’ve been to before

Stay with Jane’s parents or Walter’s too

Go for a wedding or just out of the blue

They liked to surprise

They were satisfied

Walter went to grad school: graphic design

Jane complained he didn’t have time to see her as much

Jane started to drinking with a girl from work

They closed the shop and started to flirt

They held hands on Broadway

Later that night they laid in bed

Jane’s head next to the girl’s head

She kissed her on the lips

Things were going great

So Walter was seeing this girl from school

She knew about the world and she was cool

She had some degree

In ancient history

Walter would call Jane as if things were the same

Jane would act as if nothing had changed

They were just going through some rough times

Things were just fine
