Somebody called me last week

Said they’d seen you

You were back in town

And so I went downtown,

I walked and walked and looked and looked

And didn’t see you anywhere

But this is a big city

With lots of places to hide,

And I want you to know that I still care

And you can still come home…

I think we grew up in a fairytale

Skies were the limit, well how could we fail

You’d go to college I would sing my songs

You’d call me up collect and say

«Hey, how you gettin' on»

How much you missed me

And you promised me it wouldn’t take long

I remember the day when it all turned round

You came to stay and you where different somehow

You had a secret, it was in your eyes

I couldn’t reach you, baby

No matter how I tried

I watched you slip away without a sound

And the street was always there

It was just waiting

It’s so much stronger than we thought

And the wollf don’t lie with the lamb

Unless he wants something

He wants everything you’ve got

And it’s real hard for me

To think of you that way

As a junkie — down there with all the other junkies.

I remember walking down the streets

Staring straight ahead

So we wouldn’t see the people

Sleeping on the streets

But now it seems

I’m looking down there all the time

Looking for you…

I should have seen just what was happening here

The way you looked it should have been so clear

I always thought you were the strong one

I always thought I was the fragil one

When you were calling my name

I could not hear

And the street was always there

It was just waiting

It’s so much stronger than we thought

And the wolf don’t lie with the lamb

Unless he wants something

He wants everything you’ve got

And you hear stories about people

Coming back — cleaning up —

So maybe it does happen.

And until they call me down to identify you

Some time — some night

I guess I’ll just believe

That you might be around the next corner

Waiting for me.

And I’ll keep looking…
